Winter Webinar: Climate threats to outdoor recreation

Many popular winter recreational activities this year have been forced to cancel or change course due to unprecedented warm temperatures and lack of snow. In January, temperatures dipped enough for Lake Nokomis to freeze just days before the opening weekend of the US Pond Hockey Championship, but above average temperatures led organizers to cancel the second weekend of the event. And last fall, organizers of the Twin Cities Marathon also made the difficult decision to call off the race as temperatures rose high enough to threaten runners’ health. Join us for a conversation with leaders in outdoor recreation across our region — including organizers of Wisconsin’s Birkie ski race — about how these events can plan for and adapt to climate change, and how we can embrace equitable action in climate adaptation.

New Planning Grants for Climate Resilience
Up to $870,000 is available for planning projects to be awarded during FY22. This funding provides an opportunity for communities to assess vulnerabilities and begin planning for the effects of Minnesota’s changing climate.
Climate Adaptation Scientists of Tomorrow Program
To advance climate adaptation science and increase diversity, equity, and inclusion in STEM fields, the Climate Adaptation Scientists of Tomorrow Program brings undergraduate students, graduate students, and faculty together with CASC partners to cultivate the next generation of climate scientists.
New Midwest Climate Center to be hosted at the University of Minnesota
In late September, the U.S. Department of the Interior announced the University of Minnesota as the University host of the newest U.S. Geological Survey Climate Adaptation Science Center (CASC). It is the ninth and newest CASC in a national network dedicated to providing science to help managers of the country’s natural resources, including fish and wildlife, adapt to climate change.
