Severe Thunderstorms in Southern Minnesota August 2, 2009

After one of the warmer days in weeks for southern Minnesota, thunderstorms rapidly developed during the mid to late evening hours of Sunday August 2. Low pressure over eastern South Dakota and was the primary focus for thunderstorms as it moved across the southern third of Minnesota. A warm and moist air mass ahead of this low led to significant instability. As the low approached and thunderstorms developed Sunday night, they intensified, and dropped some large hail. Baseball size hail was reported one mile south of Bird Island in Renville County. These storms did provide some beneficial rain to southern Minnesota as they moved northeast across the southern half of the Twin Cities metro area and eventually into western Wisconsin.

Below is a Local Storm Report on the August 2 storms courtesy the National Weather Service.
