The precipitation ranking map compares the June 19 through July 16, 2001 time period with the same period in previous years. The rarity of the dryness is somewhat exaggerated due to the technique used to generate the statistic. Nontheless, the four weeks ending July 16, 2001 were extraordinarily dry, and this episode ranks among the driest mid-summer spells on record.
